But i'm pretty sure after watching how it's made that when being manufactured, they probably put a glob of non conductive type grease or lubricate inside before they sealed it, to help the moving parts last longer and some of that either was left on the outside and of course grease collect dirt like a magnet or slowly got outside due to changes in atmospheric pressure and temperature over the last 20 years storage was dry but not temperature controlled. Rather than take pictures I thought this would be better.
