Review BRITISH MOTOR CORPORATION Corp Am Car Radio Bendix Austin Healy Not Working fits 1964

The **British Motor Corporation 4TMB 1964 Austin-Healey 3000** is a legendary piece of automotive history, and its original **Bendix 64 AM car radio** is a rare and coveted component that embodies the golden era of British motoring. This vintage radio, designed to complement the sleek, sporty lines of the 3000 s iconic roadster body, was engineered to deliver crisp, reliable audio performance while maintaining the mechanical robustness expected of a mid-century British vehicle. The **64-series Bendix radio** often found in Austin-Healey models of the era features a classic **dial-and-tuner design** with a smooth, weighted tuning knob, allowing drivers to navigate the AM band with precision. Its **wood-grained cabinet**, typically finished in a warm, natural tone or matching the car s interior, adds a touch of understated elegance, blending seamlessly with the Healey s luxurious yet sporty cabin. Beneath the polished exterior lies a **durable mechanical tuning mechanism**, complete with a **vacuum tube circuit** (or, in later models, a transistorized version) that ensures clear reception with minimal interference a hallmark of Bendix s engineering prowess during the 1960s.

The radio s **retro aesthetic** is further enhanced by its **knurled volume and tone controls**, which offer tactile feedback, and a **single-dial layout** that prioritizes simplicity without sacrificing functionality. The **wooden or bakelite front panel** often features subtle chrome accents, adding a touch of sophistication, while the **integrated speaker grille** (if retained) contributes to the authentic period look. When paired with the **Austin-Healey 3000 s** iconic V8 engine growl and the crackle of an open-top drive, this radio becomes more than just an accessory it s a time capsule, transporting listeners back to an era when British craftsmanship and automotive innovation reigned supreme. For collectors and enthusiasts, restoring or preserving this original Bendix unit is not just about functionality; it s about preserving a piece of automotive heritage that encapsulates the spirit of the 1960s where performance, style, and British ingenuity came together in perfect harmony. Whether installed in a fully restored 3000 or as a standalone collector s item, this radio stands as a testament to an age when every detail, from the engine to the dashboard, was designed with passion and precision.

### **Pros and Cons of Buying a 1964 British Motor 4TMB Austin-Healey 3000 with Bendix AM Radio**

#### **Pros**

1. **Classic British Engineering** The Austin-Healey 3000 is a well-regarded sports car from the golden era of British automotive design, known for its lightweight construction, handcrafted quality, and timeless styling. It represents a piece of automotive history with strong cultural appeal.

2. **Strong Performance** The car is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six engine (depending on the variant) producing around 150 160 bhp, which is impressive for its era. The manual transmission (likely a four-speed) and independent suspension provide engaging driving dynamics, making it enjoyable to drive on both road and track.

3. **Rarity and Collectibility** The 4TMB (Touring Body Model B) is a relatively rare variant of the Austin-Healey 3000, particularly in original condition. Its scarcity enhances its value over time, making it a desirable investment for enthusiasts.

4. **Originality and Authenticity** If the car is fully original (or close to it), it retains period-correct features like the Bendix AM radio, vintage wiring, and mechanical components. This authenticity is highly prized by purists and collectors.

5. **Potential for Restoration or Maintenance** The car s simplicity compared to modern vehicles means that many repairs can be done by hand, appealing to DIY mechanics. There is also a strong aftermarket support for Austin-Healey parts, making long-term ownership more feasible.

6. **Driving Experience** The open-top design, lightweight body, and responsive handling provide a thrilling, unfiltered driving experience that modern cars often lack. It is ideal for enthusiasts who appreciate the raw feel of classic motoring.

7. **Potential for Appreciation** Well-preserved examples of this model have appreciated in value over the years, especially if they are rare or have historical significance. Properly maintained cars can become more valuable as time passes.

#### **Cons**

1. **High Maintenance Costs** Classic cars like the Austin-Healey require frequent and often expensive maintenance. Original components (e.g., suspension, brakes, electrical systems) may need replacement, and labor costs for specialist mechanics can be prohibitive.

2. **Reliability Issues** The car s age means it is prone to mechanical failures, such as worn-out seals, failing electrical systems, or rust. The Bendix AM radio, while charming, is basic and may not function reliably over time, requiring restoration or replacement.

3. **Fuel and Insurance Costs** Fuel efficiency is poor by modern standards, and insurance for a classic car can be expensive, especially if it is not fully restored or lacks modern safety features. Some insurers may also charge higher premiums for high-performance or rare models.

4. **Rust and Structural Corrosion** Many classic cars suffer from rust, particularly in the chassis, suspension, and body panels. A thorough inspection is essential to avoid purchasing a car with hidden structural damage that could lead to costly repairs.

5. **Limited Modern Comforts** The car lacks modern amenities such as power steering, air conditioning, ABS, or advanced safety features. Driving in extreme weather or for long distances may be uncomfortable or impractical.

6. **Parts Availability and Cost** While parts are available for the Austin-Healey, some may be difficult or expensive to source, especially for less common variants like the 4TMB. Reproduction parts may not always match original quality.

7. **Driving Limitations** The car s age and lack of modern safety features (e.g., no seatbelts in some early models) make it less suitable for daily use, especially in urban environments with heavy traffic or poor road conditions.

8. **Time-Consuming Ownership** Owning a classic car requires significant time for maintenance, restoration, and storage. It is not a practical "set-and-forget" vehicle like a modern car.

---

### **Conclusion**

Buying a 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 4TMB with a Bendix AM radio is a passion project rather than a practical purchase. It offers unmatched charm, driving enjoyment, and collectibility for enthusiasts who appreciate classic British motoring. However, the high costs of ownership, maintenance challenges, and lack of modern conveniences make it unsuitable for casual or daily drivers.

If you are committed to restoring and maintaining the car as a hobby, it can be a rewarding experience with long-term potential for appreciation. If, however, you prioritize practicality, reliability, and low ownership costs, a modern classic or a well-preserved contemporary car would be a more sensible choice.

---

### **Recommendation**

- **Buy if:** You are an experienced classic car enthusiast with the time, budget, and mechanical skills to restore and maintain the vehicle. You value the car s historical significance, driving pleasure, and potential for appreciation over time.

- **Avoid if:** You need a reliable, low-maintenance vehicle for daily use or lack the resources to properly care for a classic car. Consider alternatives like a restored MG MGB, Triumph TR6, or a modern classic (e.g., Porsche 911, BMW 3 Series) if you want a balance of enjoyment and practicality.

Before purchasing, conduct a thorough inspection by a specialist mechanic, verify the car s service history, and ensure it is free from major rust or mechanical issues. If possible, test-drive the car to assess its condition and driving characteristics.

Details:

Part number for this radio reads 4TMB and it was made by Bendix. Push buttons work very smoothly and set stations properly. Hopefully someone can get this radio going again. It would also make for a nice filler the dash or candidate an internal FM conversion.

The plastic dial lens is in very nice condition with clear numbers and letters. I will have, or currently other types of car radios in varying condition for sale. This unit has been bench tested and is NON-WORKING. It comes with one inner knob which may not be correct.

There is a wire for power/dial light which the longer while 2 short wires are speaker. In fact the original Bendix inspection sticker is still attached to side. Manual tuning works fine up and down the scale. Its time for me to clear out some of my non-working radios that are just way too nice part.

The radio casing is very clean. It will need servicing/repair. Dial light is functional. I'm not sure just what this fits but research indicates that the Austin Healy may be one possible vehicle.
